The Skippers Road is one of New Zealands most famous, and most dramatic back country roads. We take time to explore this incredible feat of engineering from the 1880,s while traveling above the gold bearing Shotover River.
A spectacular high country journey that hugs the canyon walls following the 1880's gold mining trail down into Skippers Canyon and the famous Shotover River. Travelling through a region rich with gold mining history we cross the historic Skippers suspension bridge and visit Mt Aurum Homestead. Said by some to be more amazing than Milford Sound.
This is an adventurous and rugged off road journey following the historic dray road up the Arrow River to reach the once thriving settlement of Macetown. Fording the Arrow River repeatedly, we recount the stories of the old time gold miners and how they forged a living from this harsh yet stunning environment.
Take the opportunity to sleep overnight at the historic ghost town of Macetown. The journey takes us along the historic Macetown Road, where we take in the rugged landscape and when in season pick wild fruits for our evening meal. After driving through the Arrow River 26 times we arrive at our camp site.
